I’m not reviewing any beer today. I just wanted to highlight that there are some beers not sold or advertised as gluten free that could be considered gluten free as their gluten content is less then 20 ppm. In fact you’ll be hard pressed to find beers with no gluten at all. I think Altiplano was the last one I’ve seen.
Now, what is the deal? If the European Union considers any beer with less then 20 parts per million gluten free it would stand to reason that even if they’re not marketed as gluten free but fall on this category they should be safe to drink.
A few days ago I came across this blog which lists a few beers tested for gluten content. Obviously if you are celiac you know it is a risk but read the comments on each of the beers. Some celiac people do report success when drinking them.
The most famous of them all is the Corona Extra which has less than 10ppm but if you google it you’ll see it has some controversy behind.
Now, I’m not celiac, I’m just intolerant. My symptoms are far milder than a full celiac and I can afford making a mistake. If you are celiac be warned!
